BOOK DESCRIPTIONS
“Maheer, keep this in your account…” said Alhaji Mahmud, as he handed the bundle of money to the young man sitting in the living room. Maheer stood up, approached, and took the money from his father’s hand. He turned it over, then sat down again, slightly fidgeting with it and smiling as he said, “May Allah allow me to use it wisely for my service.” Hajiya Hajarah shook her head, smiling gently, and said in a soft voice, “You are closer to her…” Alhaji Mahmud looked at his daughter sitting on the carpet, who could not be more than twenty-two years old, and said, “May Allah bless you, my daughter.” She, herself, looked down, playing with the edge of her small scarf and did not say anything. Hajiya Hajarah then said, “Go on, you should go and sleep…”
At that moment, she lifted her big eyes and looked at her parents, saying, “See you in the morning.” Alhaji Mahmud and Hajiya Hajarah replied together, “May Allah grant us good health.” She looked at her brothers sitting in the large living room and told them goodbye as well before she got up and headed for the door to leave the parlor. Hajiya Hajarah sighed with relief and softly said,
- “Alhamdulillah, Allah has shown us this moment in good health. May Allah conceal our shortcomings and grant us blessings we do not expect…” Maheer watched her with surprise but did not say anything. She smiled at him, realizing his thoughts, and said, “So, who do you think I will marry, my only daughter?” Alhaji Mahmud replied, “It’s the same day set for yours, my dear.” Maheer, a bit surprised, said, “Oh, I didn’t know. May Allah grant us long life and good health.” Usman and Umar, who were sitting in the parlor, responded with “Ameen, O Allah.” Maheer stood up, said goodbye to his parents, and went upstairs, while his siblings followed him. Umar went into his bedroom downstairs. Standing by the walkway leading to the bedroom, she leaned against the wall. Maheer approached, noticing tears in her eyes, and asked, “What happened?” As if waiting for this, she burst into tears and sank to the ground. Usman rushed over, looking at her and asking, “What happened?” With a trembling voice, she looked at him and said, “So, they are going to marry me off to a young girl when I am still the oldest?” Usman walked past Maheer to his room. Maheer knelt down facing her and said, “Who told you they are going to marry you? You’re just going for a short break, you’ll come back. We can’t do without your cooking in this house.” She began to wipe her tears slowly while looking at him. Maheer smiled and said,
“But I see you brought that person to this house, nobody else did, right?” She looked at the money in his hand and then stood up, saying, “Well, give me that money so I can put it in my account. Don’t go and spend it for me; I don’t trust you with money…” He opened his mouth in surprise, watching her quickly leave while laughing. He nodded and went to his room.
- She had just finished getting ready for bed when her phone, placed in front of her mirror, started ringing. She walked over, picked it up, and looked at the screen. Seeing who was calling, she answered with a greeting. In a calm voice, he responded, and she slowly said, “Good evening, sir…” He replied, “Evening, Mayraah,” and it felt as though she sank in her seat when he called her name. He asked, “Are you done with your defense slide?” She replied, “Not yet; I want you to start reviewing it so I can continue.” He said, “Oh, that is thoughtful of you…” They both fell silent for a few seconds, and then he asked, “How is your mother?” She replied, “They are fine.” He said, “Maa sha Allah, I will be traveling tomorrow, so I will sleep early. Is there anything you want to tell me?” She shook her head slowly and said, “No… May Allah grant us good health.” He replied, “Ameen, good night.
